Brian
Butterfield, CISSP, co-founder and chief security officer of
Microtech IT & Cybersecurity Services, has been named one of ten finalists
in the Advanced Cybersecurity category of the 2026 MSP Titans of the Industry Awards. The
annual program is run by MSP Success.
Based in Fort
Lauderdale, Florida, Microtech provides managed IT and cybersecurity services
to law firms, accounting and financial practices, healthcare offices, and other
businesses across the United States.
Congratulations,
Brian. Everyone here is proud of you, and we are rooting for you in December.
The 2026 Advanced Cybersecurity finalists
The official
category page names the following ten finalists in alphabetical order. The list
is not a ranking:
· Adam Radulovic — XL.net
· Ben Gebremeskel — TeckPath
· Brian Butterfield — Microtech
· Corey Kirkendoll — 5K Technical Services
· Hassan Sillem — Insource IT
· Heather Lantz — OXEN Technology
· Josh Davies — Clipeum IT
· Matthew Harvey — Stepping Forward Technology
· Mike Cromwell — Netrio
· Timothy Clarkson — OxygenIT
Congratulations to
all ten. Anyone responsible for another organization's security knows how much
work sits behind a listing like this, and how little of that work is visible.
Good luck in December.
What the Advanced Cybersecurity category recognizes
The award
recognizes managed service providers that help clients stay ahead of changing
cyber threats through proactive security, threat mitigation, and client
education. According to the awards
program, industry judges evaluate applications on factors including
innovation, business impact, customer service, and contribution to the MSP
community.
The work behind Brian's finalist recognition
Those three parts
of the category describe much of what Brian and the Microtech team have spent
thirty years doing. Their clients include law firms, CPA and financial firms, and healthcare practices. Each handles sensitive
information, and a security incident can create professional, operational, and
regulatory problems.
Proactive cybersecurity
Microtech has
protected client environments since 1996 and today secures more than 25,000
devices for organizations nationwide. Much of the work is maintenance nobody
applauds: patching computers and servers, monitoring systems, testing backups
and recovery, and replacing technology before it loses vendor support. Brian's
view is that most of what keeps a firm out of trouble happens on a schedule.
The client should not have to discover the problem first.
Threat mitigation
For a professional
firm, the costly incident may start with an ordinary email: someone persuades
an employee to send money or hand over a login. Brian has spent years teaching
firms how business email compromise works. Microtech's cybersecurity services pair that education
with controls around devices, access to sensitive information, endpoint
monitoring, exposed credentials, and recovery planning. The goal is to make
sure the protections a firm depends on are actually in place and working.
AI security and governance
AI brings a new
version of an old security question: where can sensitive information go, and
who can see it? A policy alone may not answer that question when someone has a
filing due at 4 p.m. on a Thursday. Useful tools have to fit real work, while
the controls protect client information even under pressure.
For law firms, The Florida Bar's Ethics Opinion 24-1
addresses lawyers' use of generative AI and their responsibility to protect
client confidentiality. Brian built Microtech's AI Risk Review around that
practical issue: how a firm's actual AI use compares with the safeguards it
believes it has. Microtech Secure AI is part of the team's work to put
enforceable controls around AI use.
Client education
Brian has taught
accredited continuing education for attorneys and CPAs and has presented to The
Florida Bar, the New York City Bar Association, the Florida Institute of CPAs,
and audiences at MIT and the Harvard Club of Boston. He opens many talks by telling
the room that people do not need to work in IT to help protect their firms.
Then he shows them what to look for and what to do.
"Ten people are
named in this category, and I know what sits behind that for every one of them.
I am glad to be on the list. Our clients are the reason we are on it, because
they let us do the quiet part before anything went wrong."
